Navigating airport security with a prosthetic

At TASKA Prosthetics, we’re proud to support a global community of resilient, adventurous individuals who choose to live life without limits. TASKA Champion Adrian Ware recently shared his experiences navigating airports around the world, offering practical tips and insights for travellers with prosthetic limbs - particularly around the challenges of airport security.

Then and now

In my early travel days, I’ve sometimes been asked to remove my prosthetic during airport security checks - a request that was not only physically demanding but sometimes emotionally taxing. Thankfully, things have improved. These days, most airport security teams are trained to accommodate travellers with prosthetics in a more respectful and efficient manner. As such I’m no longer asked to remove my prosthetic - a welcome change that reflects growing awareness and inclusivity in travel systems worldwide.

What to expect at security

While procedures can vary depending on the country and airport, there are a few common steps travellers with prosthetics can expect:

  • Body scanners and metal detectors: Prosthetics often trigger alarms, which usually leads to a secondary screening.
  • Pat-downs and manual inspections: These are typically carried out professionally and respectfully.
  • Substance trace tests: Security officers may swab your prosthetic to check for prohibited substances. It’s a quick and standard procedure.

Dressing for a Smoother Experience

I find that dressing strategically can make a big difference at security checkpoints:

  • Skip the belt: Belts often trigger alarms and need to be removed.
  • Choose easy footwear: Slip-on shoes are ideal, especially in airports that require shoe removal.
  • Empty your pockets: Even small items can delay screening.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: Loose-fitting clothes make pat-downs easier and more comfortable.
  • Minimise accessories: Jewellery and watches can set off detectors - pack them in your carry-on instead.

Travel tips from experience

Over time, I've developed a few go-to tips for stress-free travel:

  • Arrive early: Give yourself extra time in case of delays at security.
  • Be clear and confident: Let officers know about your prosthetic as you approach.
  • Ask for privacy: If needed, request a private room for screening.
  • Pack smart: Keep documentation for your prosthetic or essential items easily accessible.

Overall while security checks can sometimes feel intrusive, I've also encountered many compassionate and curious officers who’ve made the experience more human. These moments have become opportunities to educate others about prosthetics and accessibility. Travelling with a prosthetic has helped me build patience, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for inclusive design.

At TASKA, we believe a prosthetic should never limit your ability to explore the world. With preparation, clear communication, and a positive mindset, airport security can become just another step in your journey - not a barrier to it.
