Flying with a prosthetic hand

If you have a prosthetic hand, or other prosthetic devices, you might have asked yourself, ‘Can I keep my prosthesis during the airport security screening?’. Whether you are a first-time traveller or a regular voyager, keep in mind that there are several guidelines and restrictions in airports for all passengers, but there are additional things to take into consideration when travelling with a prosthesis. But with some information and planning, your travel experience can go smoothly.

Arrive with plenty of time

Firstly, it is important to plan ahead and allow yourself extra time at the airport. If you wear an upper limb prosthesis, it’s likely you may need a little extra time to handle your luggage and get through airport security. Arriving early will give you ample time to navigate screening procedures and any potential complications that may arise.

Allowing extra time also means you can familiarise yourself with the layout of the airport and its facilities. You’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of special assistance services many airports offer, such as priority boarding or accessible restrooms, to make your journey more comfortable.

Airport security screening

In general, travellers with prosthetic devices can expect to go through the same security measures as other passengers, such as passing through metal detectors or removing shoes and jacket. In most cases, you will not be required to remove your prosthesis. However, prostheses are usually subject to additional screening, including visual and manual inspection. Aviation Security may need to see and touch your prosthetic hand and can request to see a medical certificate for your prosthesis from your physician or medical specialist. We encourage you to carry one of these certificates that you can show to security staff if requested.

Request assistance

At any time, you can notify security officers if you need assistance during the screening process such as help handling your luggage or items of clothing – as in some cases passengers are required to remove their jackets and shoes. Security personnel are trained and will have dealt with artificial limbs and prosthetics before and can provide guidance and assistance throughout the screening process.

If you’ve never gone through airport security screening with a prosthesis, you may be a little nervous about what could happen. But try to remain confident, knowing that you have the knowledge and resources to make your trip a success.
