An overview of TASKA’s production processes

My professional journey has always been guided by a passion for products that make a meaningful impact, whether it's equipment for head surgeons to electrical wheelchairs and radio communication devices. When the opportunity to work for TASKA Prosthetics arrived, I was amazed by my luck to have a such company in my hometown.

In the 4 years I've been with TASKA, we have tripled our production output. Our production model, unlike traditional assembly lines, revolves around a dynamic network of work cells connected through a Kanban bins system.

The production of the TASKA Hand involves eight distinct modules, each with its dedicated work cell featuring input and output chutes. The Kanban bins, strategically placed at the input chutes, relay information to the assemblers on what needs to be done, detailing specifications like type, size, colour, and hand side. Once a module is completed, the corresponding Kanban bin, now full, finds its place on what we call the ‘supermarket shelf’ alongside other tested modules. During assembly, each assembler retrieves the necessary modules, then return the empty bins to their respective work cells. This way, we ensure minimal work in progress, while the pull system guarantees that we produce only on demand.

Having highly skilled and efficient assemblers, combined with this modular workflow, allows them to enjoy a flexible working environment reminiscent of white-collar professionals. We've successfully blended efficiency with comfort, incorporating elements like abundant natural light, greenery, and ergonomic workstations into our workspace.

The assembly technologies at TASKA range from basic wire soldering and screwing (some screws as small as M1.2 x 3mm) to more intricate processes such as low-pressure moulding for encapsulating connectors and cutting-edge techniques like laser welding.

Running this production engine requires daily attention to feeding, maintenance, and continuous improvement. The intricate nature of the assembly process demands the use of assembly aids, or jigs, combined with detailed work instructions and ongoing training. The support team's primary focus revolves around managing logistics for over 2000 items – purchasing, checking, and storing them meticulously to ensure full traceability. Each item is delivered from the store to the respective work cell that requires it. While challenges occasionally arise, we view these instances not just as problems to solve but as opportunities to enhance our overall processes and quality standards.

The opportunity to problem-solve coupled with the opportunity to build a device that makes a meaningful impact is something that resonates deeply with myself and the wider TASKA team.
